Amalberga (c. 741–772), also known by the English form Amelia, was raised at Munsterbilsen Abbey and became a consecrated virgin, likely serving as an abbess. Her best-known story involves Pepin the Short pressing her to marry his son Charlemagne; when Charlemagne confronted her in disguise, he broke her arm trying to force her out of hiding, and tradition holds it healed immediately after. Fleeing to the banks of the Scheldt River, a great sturgeon is said to have carried her safely across to Temse, where fishermen traditionally offered a sturgeon in her honor on her feast day for generations afterward. She also reportedly fed people during famine with fish that appeared opportunely in the river. She's venerated today as patroness of fishermen and farmers, and is separately invoked for arm and shoulder injuries. Feast day July 10th.
