Blessed Imelda Lambertini, Patroness of First Communicants
Imelda Lambertini was born in 1322 in Bologna, Italy, and entered a Dominican convent as a young girl, drawn early to a life of prayer. She longed for First Communion well before the customary age, and was repeatedly told to wait. According to tradition, during Eucharistic adoration one day in 1333, a consecrated host appeared miraculously suspended in radiant light above her, visible to others present as well as to Imelda herself. A priest, recognizing the sign, brought her Communion immediately. She died shortly afterward, remembered ever since not for how she died but for the joy of the moment that preceded it. She was beatified in 1826 and remains, to this day, Blessed rather than canonized a Saint, though she is widely venerated as the patroness of First Communicants.
